Pietro,

We have been working on an urban design approach to reconstructing Kabul at
the University of Calgary. We are a small 4 person urban design team that
has taken cues from Krier, Fathan Hassy, NU, and others to produce a
regionallly oriented design scheme for Kabul. Three new villages contribute
to the greater revitalization of Kabul's traditional core with an optimistic
scheme of economic and social regeneration and self sufficiency. Behind it
is a scheme that sees the afghanis rebuilding their own country and
reinvigorating their traditional cultural heritage rather than the
parachuting of a western sprawl approach, or worse, more modernist point
towers like the soviet ones now half rotting in Kabul's core. Central to the
plan is agriculture, education, culture, and resource conservation (esp.
water).

Attached is one of three town plans generated showing a central train
station, crafts neighbourhood and warehouse district in Kabul. Two other
towns depict an agriculture community and an agricultural education
community.

Within the next few months we will be assembling our design schemes into a
document for publication. Meanwhile we are also in the process of putting
together a "work in progress" document that can be emailed to you.

We would be hounoured by your feedback and ask how we might be of help on
your mission.

With enthusiasm,

Geoff Dyer
